Breaking: Presidential assent secures two new Federal Universities in South-West

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given his assent to bills establishing two new federal universities in Nigeria.

The universities are the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.

According to Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Leader of the Senate, the president’s decision is a “defining and significant” move in addressing food insecurity and climate change challenges in the country.

“The university will specialise in technology-driven education and research, producing graduates equipped with 21st century skills in Engineering, Digital Innovation and Applied Sciences. It will drive Nigeria’s industrialization by fostering homegrown technological solutions for economic growth and job creation.

“The institution will focus on environmental sciences, offering programmes that address climate change, renewable energy, waste management and sustainable urban development. It will serve as a research hub for developing policies and solutions that align with Nigeria’s commitment to global environmental sustainability goals.” Sen. Bamidele mentioned.

Sen. Bamidele had sponsored the bills in 2023 and 2024, with the aim of bridging the knowledge gap in science, technology, and innovation, as well as promoting environmental sustainability and agricultural innovation.

The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti will specialize in technology-driven education and research, producing graduates with 21st-century skills in engineering, digital innovation, and applied sciences.

The university will also focus on environmental sciences, offering programs that address climate change, renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable urban development.

On the other hand, the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji will serve as a center for advanced agricultural education, research, and innovation, contributing to the country’s food security and sustainable agricultural practices.

The university will develop improved farming techniques, agro-processing methods, and climate-smart agriculture solutions to boost productivity and resilience.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had strongly recommended the establishment of the two universities, stating that they meet all requisite guidelines and standards.

With the president’s assent, these universities are expected to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s development in the areas of technology, environmental sustainability, and agriculture.
