A fierce gun battle is currently underway between Nigerian Army troops and gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The gunmen, who were camped near a river at the boundary between Abia and Imo State, have been exchanging fire with troops from the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade in Ohafia, Abia State.

As the situation escalated, over 15 Hilux vehicles and armoured personnel carriers arrived at the village around 6am to reinforce the military.

The soldiers have secured key junctions leading to and from the village, while other units continue to engage the gunmen in the surrounding bush.

The ongoing gunfire has caused widespread tension in the area, with no official statements issued by either the Nigerian Army or the Abia State Government.

This incident comes on the heels of a recent attack by unknown gunmen on policemen in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, which resulted in the death of ASP Etet Ubokulo.

The exchange of gunfire between the Nigerian Army and the gunmen has sparked fears among residents, who are anxiously waiting for the situation to be brought under control.

The military’s efforts to reinforce the area and secure key junctions are aimed at preventing the situation from escalating further.
