A deadly invasion by gunmen disguised in army uniforms rocked the Oreke-Okegbo community in Ifelodun Local Government Area last Thursday, leaving one person dead and another injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the community at 7:00 p.m., shooting one person at the Awere river.

Despite efforts by the monarch, Oba Sunday Afolabi, Oloreke of Oreke, to contact the army stationed at Oro Ago, no assistance arrived.

Oba Afolabi confirmed the attack, stating, “One person was shot and injured, while another lost their life.”

“The bandits including a woman came into my community from a nearby neighbourhood and encountered some guards protecting some Chinese nationals working in a mining site in the area and snatched a gun to carry out their mission.

“After the attack, they got stuck at the Awere river after the Babanla town as the river was full and they could not cross, until the following morning when they were able to escape.

“They are not herdsmen, though they spoke Hausa language. I suspect they are foreign nationals from neighbouring countries”, he added.

The state police command spokesperson, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, who confirmed the incident said the police are working to get the criminals.

She said, “The command is aware of this information. Investigations have long begun to ascertain its authenticity.

“Notwithstanding, all security measures have been emplaced to protect the lives and property of the people in Kwara State. Further developments on the matter will be communicated soon”, she added.

The community remains shaken, and residents are demanding increased security measures to prevent future attacks.
