Cameroon’s Government has reassured citizens that President Paul Biya, 91, is in excellent health, contrary to circulating rumors of his demise.

However, many Cameroonians remain skeptical, demanding proof of their leader’s well-being.

Biya has not been seen publicly since his official visit to China over a month ago.

Gloria Wirkom, a businessperson in Yaounde, expressed the sentiments of many citizens, stating, “He is our president, and if there is something wrong with him, we have the right to know… We are pleading with the government of Cameroon to let us know the health state of our president.” Wirkom emphasized that she will only believe Biya is alive when she sees him.

The Government’s assertion that Biya is in Geneva, Switzerland, working for Cameroon’s development, has done little to alleviate concerns.

Rene Emmanuel Sadi, Government spokesperson, attributed rumors of Biya’s death to “pure imagination” on Cameroon State TV.

However, citizens like Akongnwi Neba, a merchant, insist that the government should provide proof of Biya’s whereabouts, arguing that it is their right as citizens to know.

Biya, the world’s oldest leader, has ruled Cameroon for over four decades. His supporters have been holding rallies urging him to run for president again in the 2025 elections, although Biya has not confirmed his intentions.
