Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) have staged a protest in response to the introduction of a new 10-hour daily electricity supply policy on campus.
The policy, announced on Tuesday, 16th July 2024, had sparked widespread outrage among students, who are demanding a constant power supply.
According to a memo issued by the Department of Works and Maintenance of the university, electricity would be available for six hours during the day (8:00am – 2:00pm) and four hours at night (10:00pm – 2:00am).
The students have rejected this arrangement, calling for a reversal of all fees and a refund for those who had already paid.
The protest has brought all vehicular movements and transportation systems within the campus to a halt, with students blocking the main entrance of the institution.
Security personnel have been deployed to strategic locations to maintain law and order.
The students have also instructed cab operators and tricyclists to cease operations as the protest continues.
At the time of filing this report, university authorities had yet to comment on the situation.
The protest is on-going with students determined to push for their demands.
