ASUU Offers 12 UNILAG Indigent Students N1.4m Scholarship

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has offered 12 students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, who are indigent, but brilliant, scholarships to support their studies at the university.

The beneficiaries are all undergraduates, including those living with disabilities, and spread across levels, pursuing different courses of study.

The Chairman of ASUU of the branch, Prof. Kayode Adebayo, made this known on Tuesday in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune.

According to him, the scholarship award was a directive from the national body of ASUU as a way of lessening the financial burden of some indigent, but brilliant students across the nation’s public universities.

He explained that every November 12 has been set aside by ASUU nationals to recognise and celebrate ASUU members who have either made sterling contributions or have paid the supreme price in the service of the union and that the union always used the occasion to equally give out scholarship awards to two indigent students annually in various public universities.

This year’s edition of ASUU’s Heroes Day, Adebayo said, was held at Kaduna State University, where two deserving students of the institution were given the award as symbolic for the year.

“So, in line with the national directive, ASUU-UNILAG would award scholarships to two indigent students of UNILAG on behalf of the national secretariat, and on its own, in line with its congress resolution of October 13th, 2023, it would award an additional 10 students, making the awardees 12 altogether,” he clarified.

Adebayo, a professor of Architecture, noted that while each of the national award recipients would receive N200,000, the 10 others would receive N100,000 each, all totalling N1.4 million.

He said the union selected the beneficiaries based on their applications and interviews conducted for them to know they truly deserved the award.

The ASUU branch chair noted that they would all be presented with their awards at an event on Thursday, November 23, at UNILAG.
