The Yoruba Nation Global Directorate has responded strongly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent directive to clamp down on Yoruba self-determination activists, describing the move as hypocritical and a threat to fundamental human rights.
In a statement signed by the group’s secretary, Princess Adeola Atayero Olamijulo, and made available to The Yoruba Times, the Yoruba Nation Global Directorate reminded the President that the right to self-determination is a globally recognized and legally protected right under international law.
“Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to which Nigeria is a signatory, guarantees the unquestionable and inalienable right of all peoples to self-determination,” the group stated.
The group expressed disappointment that President Tinubu, who once advocated for regional autonomy and self-determination, would now seek to criminalize peaceful and lawful agitation for those very same ideals.
“It is therefore hypocritical and deeply regrettable that President Tinubu, who once advocated for regional autonomy and self-determination, would now seek to criminalise peaceful and lawful agitation for those very same ideals,” the statement read.
The Yoruba Nation Global Directorate described its movement as non-violent, disciplined, and anchored in truth, justice, and dialogue, with a campaign guided by legitimate grievances and the aspirations of the Yoruba people to determine their own political destiny.
“We are law-abiding citizens who reject violence. We seek freedom through reasoned advocacy and democratic means,” the group stated.
The group warned that any attempt to arrest, harass, or intimidate its activists would not only provoke resistance from the Yoruba people but also draw Nigeria into direct confrontation with international laws and norms.
“To silence peaceful advocates is to wage war against conscience, and against the very principles Nigeria claims to uphold,” the statement added.
The Yoruba Nation Global Directorate urged all Yoruba sons and daughters to remain calm, watchful, and united, and called on the international community to keep a close watch on developments in Nigeria and stand firm in defense of fundamental rights and freedoms.
“Freedom is not a privilege; it is a birthright,” the group declared, urging President Tinubu to reconsider his stance and choose dialogue over oppression.
“History will not absolve those who use power to stifle peaceful dissent. Freedom is a right, not a favour.” the group noted
