Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has called on the country to recombinmit themselves to the core principles of June 12, emphasizing freedom, transparency, social justice, and inclusive governance.
He made this call in a message on Friday, highlighting the enduring significance of June 12, the date of Nigeria’s historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.
“Let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of June 12; freedom, transparent and accountable government, social justice, active citizen participation, and a just society where no one is oppressed.
Happy Democracy Day, and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and protect our troops,” Tinubu stated.
In his address to a joint session of the National Assembly, Tinubu paid tribute to the men and women who laid down their lives and liberty in pursuit of democratic freedom following the annulled June 12 presidential election.
He also announced the conferment of national honours on dozens of democracy icons and granted posthumous pardons to members of the Ogoni Nine and other political prisoners.
