Former England international and football legend Rio Ferdinand has spoken warmly about his connection to Nigeria, expressing deep admiration for the Yoruba people and their culture.
Ferdinand said that if he were not English, Nigeria—particularly the Yoruba ethnic group—would be his preferred cultural identity. He described the Yoruba as “some of the warmest, kindest, and most dignified people” he has encountered.
The former Manchester United star recalled his first visit to Lagos, highlighting the exceptional hospitality he received. He noted that during the visit, he was bestowed with the traditional title “Afiwajoye of Lagos,” a gesture he said left a lasting impression.
Ferdinand also shared his fondness for Yoruba cuisine, revealing that he tried amala and ewedu during his time in Lagos and has since sought out Nigerian restaurants in England to eat the meal repeatedly.
According to him, Yoruba people embody remarkable hospitality, strong cultural pride, and a welcoming spirit. “Whenever I talk about Nigeria, I always talk about the Yoruba with pride,” he said, adding that he would “happily be Yoruba” if he were not English.
Ferdinand has visited Lagos twice and said the experience has strengthened his admiration for Nigeria and its cultural richness.
