The 2023 Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the demolition of his brother’s property in Lagos.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi lamented the brazen display which he refers to as “lawlessness and impunity” that has become all too common in Nigeria.
According to Obi, his brother’s company property in Ikeja, Lagos, was invaded by a group of people who demolished the building without any restraint.
“This morning, my youngest brother called me frantically, informing me that a group of people had invaded his company property in Ikeja, Lagos, and were demolishing the building,” Obi explained.
Upon arrival at the scene, Obi was met by security personnel who attempted to bar him from entering the property. Despite his efforts to reason with them, citing the property’s legitimate ownership by his brother’s company for over a decade, they claimed to have a court judgment. However, when Obi requested to see the judgment, he was shown a document issued against an unknown person and squatters.
“How do you sue an unknown person? How does a court issue a judgment in such a farce of a case? No one was served. No name was written. Yet they showed up with excavators and began destroying a structure that had stood for over 15 years,” Obi asked.
The situation took a more bizarre turn when Obi asked the excavators who had hired them, and they claimed not to know anyone. Obi then asked them to inform their employer to call him, but no one called or showed up.
Peter Obi lamented the state of lawlessness in Nigeria, saying, “I am just shocked. How did Nigeria get to this level of lawlessness? What kind of country are we trying to build when the rights of citizens, their lives, their properties, and their voices are trampled upon daily?” he questioned
