The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to integrate the state with its neighboring regions.
This move is aimed at fostering sustainable growth through interconnected economic and cultural activities.
This was contained in a released communiqué by the State from the recent Physical Planning Summit, which took place on October 15 and 16.
The summit aimed to address critical challenges in physical planning and urban development, bringing together key stakeholders, industry experts, and government officials.
According to the communiqué, the summit emphasized the need for a collective vision for the future of Lagos. It highlighted innovative strategies and practical solutions to ensure Lagos remains a dynamic and well-planned metropolis through public-private partnerships.
The summit’s recommendations focus on reshaping the state’s physical planning and urban landscape to ensure sustainable growth.
Key highlights include integrating Lagos with neighboring regions to foster sustainable growth through interconnected economic and cultural activities.
Engr. Oluwole Sotire, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning, stated, “The government is working hard to put Lagos on the global map, and there are plenty of policies designed to benefit the citizens.”
He emphasized the need to streamline the planning permit process, reduce fees, and minimize bureaucratic delays to improve the ease of doing business in the Lagos Megacity.
The summit also called for a review of existing land tenure and environmental laws to enable more effective urban planning and development. It stressed the importance of capacity development for professionals in physical planning and urban development, as well as the adoption of contemporary technological innovations in urban planning processes and smart growth development.
The establishment of an institutional framework that would establish a high-power implementation committee was also recommended.
This committee would oversee the implementation of the summit’s outcomes.
Additionally, the summit proposed the setting up of the Lagos Physical Planning Summit Working Group, which would include players from both public and private sectors to ensure effective collaboration and implementation.
Furthermore, the communiqué emphasized the need to provide an enabling environment, including required human and financial resources for Physical Planning activities in Lagos State.
The communiqué reaffirms the State’s commitment to sustainable development, as outlined in the Lagos Development Plan 2022–2052 and the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda.
It encourages stakeholders to collaborate with the Government in implementing the summit’s outcomes.
