The Lagos State Government has announced plans to decommission major landfills that have outlived their usefulness as part of its renewed efforts to enhance waste management and promote environmental sustainability across the state.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, following a strategic meeting with chairmen of all 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

According to Wahab, the initiative forms part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader agenda to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and flood-free Lagos through improved coordination between state and local authorities.

“We are decommissioning landfills like Olusosun and Solous 3 that have outlived their usefulness, while ensuring that functional ones like Epe remain active and efficient,” Wahab stated.

He added that the state government remains committed to strengthening waste collection systems, expanding recycling initiatives, and introducing modern waste management technologies that align with global environmental standards.

The move is expected to reduce environmental hazards, enhance urban sanitation, and support the state’s long-term sustainability goals.
