The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced in-person voter registration in Lagos State, signaling a major step in its ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The initiative, according to the Commission, is designed to give eligible Nigerians residing in Lagos the opportunity to register for the first time, update their personal details, transfer their voter registration to new polling units, or replace lost and damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Speaking at the flag-off, INEC officials emphasized that the exercise underscores the Commission’s commitment to inclusiveness, transparency, and expanding democratic participation. They explained that while the online pre-registration portal remains active for those who wish to begin the process digitally, the in-person registration will cater to citizens who prefer or require physical verification.

Designated registration centers have been established across the state’s 20 local government areas, including INEC offices and specially selected public locations, to ensure accessibility for Lagos residents. The exercise will run on weekdays during official working hours, with provisions made for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.

Residents who turn up for registration are expected to present valid identification documents such as a National Identity Number (NIN), driver’s license, international passport, or any government-issued ID for verification.

INEC urged all eligible Lagosians who have not yet registered to seize this opportunity, stressing that voter registration is a constitutional right and the foundation of meaningful participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The Commission also appealed to political parties, civil society organizations, and community leaders to support the awareness campaign, ensuring that as many citizens as possible are mobilized to register ahead of future elections.

With Lagos being Nigeria’s most populous state and a critical electoral battleground, the success of the voter registration drive is expected to significantly influence the credibility and outcome of subsequent elections.
