The Kwara State Government has ordered the temporary closure of schools across five local government areas following heightened security concerns in parts of the state.
In a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Education, Lawal Olohungbebe, said schools in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin and Oke Ero local government areas have been directed to suspend academic activities until further notice.
According to the statement, the decision became necessary after security agencies issued an advisory warning that some locations in the affected councils could be vulnerable to attacks. The government noted that the measure is aimed at safeguarding schoolchildren while ongoing security operations continue in the region.
The closure comes days after an attack on a church in Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed two people and abducted several worshippers.
The state government said it is working with security agencies to restore normalcy and will announce reopening dates once clearance is given.
