Nollywood actor Olarenwaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has reportedly been released from prison following a Court of Appeal judgment that overturned his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor.
The actor was arrested in 2021 and, in July 2022, the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja sentenced him to 16 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple counts related to the assault of a 14-year-old girl. The case had generated nationwide attention, sparking debates about the handling of sexual abuse allegations in the entertainment industry and the need for justice for minors.
An unverified video circulating on social media shows Baba Ijesha sitting in a vehicle shortly after his release, appearing relieved and thanking supporters. In the video, he was heard speaking in Yoruba, saying: “Apase, I’m out… I just came out. I want to relax. I just want to leave here, so I decided to inform you. Thank you for supporting me. I will call you.” The video has been widely shared on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), though it has not been independently verified by news outlets.
Nollywood actor and activist Yomi Fabiyi confirmed the release and welcomed the Appeal Court’s ruling. On Instagram, Fabiyi described the judgment as providing clarity in what he called a mishandled case. He urged the public and authorities to handle sensitive allegations with care, emphasizing that the decision should not be misconstrued as condoning abuse.
“He is not just back but better,” Fabiyi wrote. “The lengthy legal battle underscores the importance of fairness, due process, and protection of rights in all cases involving minors. We never and will never condone or support any form of sexual abuse, especially against children or minors. We will continue to advocate for justice and protection of fundamental human rights.”
The case has remained a flashpoint in discussions around accountability and legal procedures within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with many observers highlighting both the challenges of prosecuting high-profile individuals and the importance of safeguarding victims.
With his release, Baba Ijesha is expected to resume personal activities and engagements while the public and fans continue to debate the implications of the Appeal Court’s decision.
