The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has expressed strong disappointment and criticism towards United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for accepting an invitation to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia.
Their disappointment was particularly contentious given that Guterres declined Ukraine’s invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland back in June.
The BRICS summit, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, will take place from October 22-24 in Kazan, with 32 countries confirming their participation, including 24 heads of state.
The agenda will focus on economic cooperation, trade agreements, and tackling challenges like geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown, and climate change.
Ukraine views Guterres’ decision as a “wrong choice” that would damage the UN’s reputation, particularly considering the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The Ministry emphasized that Guterres’ participation in the BRICS summit undermines the UN’s neutrality and legitimacy.
The development comes amid growing interest in BRICS membership, with over 40 countries expressing interest in joining the bloc.
The summit’s outcome will likely have significant implications for global governance, international relations, and the balance of power.
It’s worth noting that Guterres’ participation in the summit has not been officially confirmed, but Ukraine’s reaction underscores the complexities of global politics.
However, the UN deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, remained tight-lipped about Guterres’ travel plans, saying announcements would come later.
