Prominent Nigerian activist, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, for visiting Afe Babalola to plead on behalf of Dele Farotimi, a human rights lawyer currently in prison.
Sowore described Obi’s actions as an “unspeakable and despicable injustice” in the fight against judicial corruption in Nigeria.
Sowore argued that Obi’s visit to Babalola undermines the principles of justice and equality, comparing it to forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus during the Civil Rights era in the United States. He emphasized that the struggle for justice and accountability must continue, and that Obi’s actions are a setback to this struggle.
Many Nigerians have expressed their support for Sowore’s position, criticizing Obi for his perceived attempt to undermine the justice system.
They argue that Obi’s actions are a clear indication of his lack of commitment to the principles of justice and equality.
In contrast, some Obi supporters have defended his actions, arguing that he was simply trying to show solidarity with Farotimi and his family.
Recall, Peter Obi had earlier denounced the arrest of Dele Farotimi, describing it as a “gross misuse of police powers” and a “grave assault on democracy and justice in Nigeria”.
However, some critics argue that Obi’s statement fell short, as he failed to mention the name of the person responsible for Farotimi’s arrest. These critics suggest that Obi’s reluctance to name may be due to the fact that the individual in question was a supporter of Obi during the 2023 General election, and Obi may be hesitant to offend them.
However, Sowore and his supporters remain unconvinced, insisting that Obi’s actions were a misguided attempt to curry favor with Babalola.
The controversy surrounding Obi’s visit to Babalola has sparked a heated debate about the role of politicians in the justice system as well.
While some argue that politicians have a responsibility to speak out against injustice, others believe that they should not interfere with the justice system.
Sowore’s condemnation of Obi’s actions has struck a chord with many Nigerians who are frustrated with the perceived lack of accountability in the country’s justice system.
