The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) 2024 in New-York, United Sates.

This was contained in the State House press release signed by Special Adviser to the President
(Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, made available to The Yoruba Times on Thursday.

In a recent statement, the State House announced that President Bola Tinubu will skip the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation.

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) opened on Tuesday, 10 September 2024.

The first day of the high-level General Debate will be Tuesday, 24 September 2024, continue through Saturday, 28 September, and conclude on Monday, 30 September 2024.

However, President Bola Tinubu had earlier issued a directive to reduce the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings in New York, United States.

The President Chief of Staff, Hin. Femi Gbajabiamila, who made this known to the public said, “I have received a directive from Mr. President that this time, we will be strict. If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America, and this is a directive from Mr. President,” he said.

More so, President Tinubu prioritizes domestic issues, particularly after recent devastating flooding.

Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, attend key events, and hold bilateral meetings.

The UNGA’s high-level General Debate runs from September 24-28, focusing on “Leaving no one behind.”
