Rivers youths, on Monday, stormed the streets in peaceful protest to oppose the planned impeachment of the state governor, Similanyi Fubara.
The youths, in their numbers, were seen in a viral video marching through major roads and streets in the Rivers metropolis chanting, “If Port Harcourt don taya you, go Abuja e. Wike, If Port Harcourt don taya you, go Abuja e” (If you are tired of Port- Harcourt, move to Abuja. Wike go to Abuja.
Members of the state House of Assembly on Monday, had early in the day launched an impeachment proceeding against Fubara.
Meanwhile, the governor claimed he has done nothing to warrant impeachment.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.
“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press”, he added.
Meanwhile, some members of the Ijaw Youths Council and scores of Rivers youths thronged the Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday to express solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The youth were seen at the Government House entrance, singing solidarity songs, saying they would not allow any impeachment to stand.
The Information Officer of the Ijaw Youths Council, Eastern Zone, George Benjamin, said there should be peace in the state.
Benjamin also condemned the suspension of the House Leader, Edison Edison, by some lawmakers earlier on Monday.
He said: “All we pray is peace. If truly there is any plan to impeach anyone, I condemn the act because Edison as the leader of the House has not done anything wrong.
“So we are calling for peace and let there be dialogue. We stand with the governor, that is why we are here. Let there be peace in Rivers State.”
