Stakeholders from Kwara South Senatorial District have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of their federal lawmakers, accusing them of ineffective representation and neglecting the development needs of the region.
During a strategic consultation meeting held in Ilorin on Monday, members of the Kwara South Development Initiative (KSDI) gathered under the theme “Reawakening the Giant” to address concerns about the lack of meaningful projects and engagement by their elected representatives.
The lawmakers under scrutiny include Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru, representing Kwara South; Hon. Tijani Kayode Ismail, representing Oyun/Offa/Ifelodun Federal Constituency; and Hon. Abdulraheem Olawuyi Ajuloopin, representing Ekiti/Irepodun/Oke-Ero/Isin Federal Constituency.
Oba Mohammed Bolaji Alebiosu, Chairman of the Igbomina Traditional Council and Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, voiced the sentiments of traditional rulers in the zone, stating, “Can anyone see the impact of any member of the National Assembly representing us? They have failed to touch the lives of their constituents. If you invite them for religious or community development purposes, they will not turn up.”
Dr. Johnson Adewumi, Convener of KSDI, highlighted the district’s underdevelopment despite producing several senators and House of Representatives members since 1999. He noted, “Our citizens have chaired several committees in both chambers of the National Assembly with no tangible contribution. We cannot find any project of value in the entire Kwara South. This is unacceptable.”
Prince Sunday Fagbemi, State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), acknowledged the concerns, admitting that representation from the district has been below expectations. He assured that the party would thoroughly screen aspirants before presenting them to the electorate, emphasizing that non-performing candidates would not be fielded in future elections.
The stakeholders concluded the meeting by urging residents to collect money from politicians but vote for credible candidates who are committed to the development of Kwara South.
