The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has confirmed the killing of the Brigade Commander of Damboa, Brigadier General Uba, hours after he was declared missing during an operation in the forest.
Military sources said the senior officer had earlier sent a video message indicating he was safe, appearing calm and unharmed in the clip. They noted that the recording was made before his condition deteriorated. According to reports, the commander later became disoriented while navigating the forest, prompting urgent rescue efforts involving ground troops and air support.
At some point, he reportedly communicated to colleagues that he was already heading back to base, raising initial hopes that he would be found alive. However, after news of his disappearance circulated widely, ISWAP fighters were said to have re-captured him. His death was confirmed shortly afterward.
The Army had earlier announced that the commander had safely returned to base, a statement now contradicted by emerging details surrounding the incident.
His death has intensified scrutiny over the military’s handling of frontline operations and the accuracy of official communication regarding troop movements and welfare.
