The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
The suspension followed a meeting between the IGP and a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the decision was reached after discussions on the ongoing enforcement of the tinted glass law and the need for continued collaboration between the Police and the Bar in promoting public confidence and upholding the rule of law.
Hundeyin noted that although there is currently no court order restraining the police from enforcing the law, the decision to halt its implementation was taken “out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association.”
He added that the temporary suspension will remain in effect pending the hearing of a motion on notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.
The Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, restricts the use of vehicles with tinted or darkened windows, except with official authorization. Its enforcement has, however, faced widespread criticism from motorists and civil rights advocates, who argue that it often leads to harassment and extortion by law enforcement officers.
