The All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools has called on the government to fund public primary and secondary education in Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH on the World Children’s Day celebrated on Monday, ANCOPSS National President, Mallam Ibrahim Musa, said that teachers must also be well taken care of, saying these were the two major solutions to challenges in the education sector.
World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“Our message to the government as far as education is concerned is that the government should fund public education so that every child in Nigeria will have access to quality education. Government should also know that they cannot fund education without taking care of teacher’s welfare. Every state government should take care of their teachers, that is the way to solve our problems. They should recruit more qualified teachers”, Musa said.
He also admonished parents to support their children’s schools, saying “Parents should support their children, parents should visit their children’s schools and there should be a strong Parent Teachers Association. Parents can come in the form of Public Private Partnership because there are parents who are influential.”
