The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 28 individuals allegedly involved in internet fraud across Ilorin, Kwara State, in a coordinated operation by the Commission’s Ilorin Zonal Command.
According to the EFCC, the arrests were made early Tuesday morning across multiple locations, including Tanke, University Road, Oshin, and Agbabiaka. The suspects are believed to have operated sophisticated online schemes targeting both local and international victims.
During the operation, the Commission seized several items linked to the alleged cybercrime activities, including luxury cars, motorcycles, laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic devices. These, the EFCC said, are being held as evidence for ongoing investigations.
The Commission stressed that the suspects would face prosecution once investigations are completed, in line with existing cybercrime and fraud laws. EFCC officials reiterated that internet fraud has damaging implications for Nigeria’s reputation abroad, noting that the activities of such individuals have prompted tighter visa and travel restrictions for Nigerians in certain countries.
Residents of Kwara State and other parts of the country were urged to report suspicious online transactions or activities to the EFCC to aid in curbing cybercrime.
The Commission warned that it would continue to pursue individuals involved in online fraud relentlessly and called on the public to support its mandate by being vigilant and proactive in reporting offenders.
